Her Majesty The Queen attends reception to mark the 60th anniversary of Cruse Bereavement Care

Her Majesty The Queen attended a reception at St James’s Palace on Monday 21st October to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Cruse and we were delighted that two representatives of South West Surrey Cruse were in attendance and had the honour of meeting Her Majesty.

The reception was an opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication of our volunteers who provide bereavement support to people across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Last year, Cruse's network of 5,000 volunteers gave support to almost 60,000 people.

The Queen met many individuals who have been instrumental in our work over the last 60 years, including volunteers who provided support after devastating events, including 9/11 and the Grenfell Tower Fire.

Her Majesty also met many volunteers who were supported by Cruse Bereavement Care after a bereavement and now give up their time to support others who are also going through a similar experience.

Steven Wibberley, Chief Executive of Cruse Bereavement Care, said: “We were delighted that Her Majesty The Queen could join us for our 60th anniversary celebrations. The event was a fantastic way to recognise the incredible work that our volunteers do to support people after a loved one dies. They are the lifeblood of the organisation and we couldn’t do the work that we do without them.”

Yolanda Clarke, a Cruse Bereavement Volunteer who attended the reception at St James’s Palace, said: “I wanted to volunteer for Cruse because after my parents and brother died, I came to the conclusion that my purpose in life was to use my experiences of loss and bereavement to help other bereaved people.

“I enjoy being a bereavement volunteer and seeing the people I support become more hopeful as they explore and understand their grief.”

Cruse Bereavement Care is the largest bereavement charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland providing free support, information and advice to adults, children and young people who have been bereaved.

This year Cruse is celebrating its 60th anniversary, further information about Cruse’s history can be found here: www.cruse.org.uk/about-cruse/60-years-of-cruse.
